What will I make?
You’ll design and create your own unique jewellery pieces, working on your own designs or from projects set by the tutor. With their guidance, you’ll apply the skills learned during the course to bring your creative ideas to life. Projects can include rings, pendants, earrings, or bracelets—tailored to your interests and skill level.
What will I learn?
Over the course of the 10 weeks, you’ll build a strong foundation in jewellery making while developing confidence in both technical skills and creative decision-making. Learning is tailored to your experience level and personal projects, with guidance and feedback throughout.
You’ll learn how to:
- Use core jewellery tools and equipment safely and effectively
- Apply essential jewellery-making techniques, including piercing, soldering, annealing, filing, texturing, roll-milling, forming, doming, and polishing
- Translate your ideas into wearable jewellery, from initial concept through to finished piece
- Understand basic construction methods and problem-solving approaches in jewellery making, helping you choose appropriate techniques and processes for your design ideas
- Work more independently and confidently on personal projects, with growing technical control
Learning is tailored to your experience level, allowing beginners to gain solid fundamentals while more experienced makers can deepen and refine their skills. By the end of the course, you’ll have a clearer understanding of jewellery processes, stronger practical skills, and greater confidence in developing and realising your own jewellery designs.
What will happen during the workshop?
Across ten weekly sessions, you’ll explore a wide range of fundamental jewellery-making techniques, gaining essential technical skills and growing in creative confidence. You’ll work in a relaxed and supportive studio environment with expert tutor guidance, combining demonstrations, hands-on making, and one-to-one support.
Each class will include short demonstrations as needed, followed by focused making time where you’ll work on your own projects at your own pace. Your tutor will introduce techniques relevant to the group’s projects, demonstrate key processes, and support you as you apply them directly to your work. Most of each session is dedicated to making, with time for discussion, feedback, and troubleshooting throughout.
Your tutor will also help you plan your projects, refine your ideas, and solve practical challenges as they arise. You’ll be encouraged to share ideas, learn from others in the group, and develop your work week by week.
Each week builds on the last, so you progress at your own pace, gaining momentum and confidence while developing a clearer understanding of your own making process. Whether your goal is to pursue jewellery making as a hobby or take steps toward a professional career, this course offers the tools, techniques, and support to help you succeed.

Who is my teacher?
Annie Ruthven-Taggart
Since training at Central St Martins and then Sir John Cass Faculty at London Met in 1995, Annie has been working as a freelance jeweller and designer ever since, establishing Artgems Jewellery in the same year. In addition, Annie has over 20 years experience, teaching jewellery making to adults of all ages and abilities. She very much enjoys teaching those who are completely new to the craft as well as honing and advancing skills in those who already have some expertise. Teaching an approach to design development she considers as important as practical jewellery making skills and the two are very much taught in tandem.
