LEARN-TO Chase & Repoussé (two day workshop) [JUNE 2026]

Start Date: Friday 19 June, 2026

End Date: Saturday 20 June, 2026

Start Time: 10am

End Time: 4.30pm

Venue: FORGE (2nd site, see "How to get there" below)

This two-day introductory workshop offers jewellers and small-scale metalworkers an opportunity to explore the fundamentals of chasing and repoussé techniques. Designed as a technical introduction, the course focuses on understanding how metal moves, how relief is created, and how controlled hammer and tool techniques can be used to produce clean, accurate surface effects.

Across two intensive days, participants will work through a series of structured technical exercises designed to build confidence and precision. Rather than producing a finished piece, the workshop emphasises process, experimentation, and skill development through guided studies in line work, texture, and relief formation.

Particular attention is given to hammer control, tool angle, strike rhythm, and metal support, helping participants develop consistency and accuracy while avoiding distortion or damage to the metal.

Working primarily in copper and brass, participants will explore a range of introductory chasing and repoussé methods through demonstrations and practical exercises in a focused, supportive environment with plenty of individual guidance.

Please note materials are not included.

What will I make?

During the workshop, you will produce a series of technical samples and exercises, including:

  • Precision line and texture studies

  • Parallel, tapered, and intersecting line exercises

  • Depth and relief calibration samples

  • Simple geometric repoussé studies

  • Surface texture and pattern experiments

  • Small practice panels exploring controlled relief and definition

  • Optional silver samples if participants choose to bring their own silver

By the end of the workshop, you will have built a foundational understanding of chasing and repoussé techniques, along with a collection of reference samples and exercises to support continued practice at home.

What will I learn?

This workshop introduces the core technical principles of chasing and repoussé, including:

  • Preparing, annealing, and supporting metal for chasing and repoussé

  • Understanding metal movement and controlled displacement

  • Basic chasing and repoussé hammer techniques

  • Controlling tool angle, strike rhythm, and depth

  • Producing clean line work and controlled surface textures

  • Creating simple low-relief forms and geometric patterns

  • Using a variety of chasing tools and punches

  • Exploring stippling, lining, matting, and texturing techniques

  • Identifying and avoiding common issues such as distortion or uneven relief

  • Understanding the properties of copper, brass, and silver in relief work

  • Developing confidence and consistency through technical exercises

What will happen during the workshop?

Each day combines step-by-step demonstrations with guided practical exercises. Participants will begin with introductory techniques and progressively move through increasingly controlled studies in line, texture, and low relief.

The workshop is structured around experimentation and technical skill-building rather than producing a finished object, allowing participants to focus on developing control, accuracy, and confidence with the tools and processes.

Individual guidance and feedback will be provided throughout, with plenty of opportunity to refine technique and troubleshoot challenges in a supportive studio environment.

With a small group size, participants receive close attention and tailored instruction throughout the two days.

What skills do I need?

Intermediate & Advanced: For those who have foundation knowledge and experience of jewellery making. Ideal for makers looking to up skill and advance their practice.

If you are unsure if you have the correct level of experience, feel free to email  us for advice.

What should I bring?

  • Reading glasses (if you need them!)

  • Notebook and pen (to take notes)

  • Apron to protect clothes

  • Basic hand tools from your own tool kit as advised by your teacher.

  • This workshop does not include materials although the teacher will supply copper and brass.  You will need to buy your own silver if you would like to make samples in silver, your teacher will be able to advise.

What should I wear?

Clothes: Casual and not too precious as they may get a bit dusty or damaged.  Avoid long, loose fitting sleeves and anything that might catch or get caught whilst you are working.

Shoes: Casual flat shoes and no open toed sandals in case you drop a tool or something hot on them!

Hair: Tie long hair back.

Who is my teacher?

This workshop is led by Pete Musson, a specialist silversmith and highly experienced educator with over 20 years’ experience teaching Jewellery and Metal at the Royal College of Art.

Pete has lectured and delivered masterclasses internationally, including at Musashino Art University, Hanyang University, Bishopsland Educational Trust and Glasgow School of Art.

Known for his expertise in silversmithing and technical innovation, Pete combines deep practical knowledge with thoughtful mentorship, supporting jewellers to develop precision, confidence and a strong understanding of contemporary jewellery construction
