What will I make?
Participants will create a fully constructed round rex collet mount, ready for stone setting. More advanced students may also have the opportunity to set stones into their finished collet.
What will I learn?
Key skills covered in the session include:
• Measuring and preparing metal for collets
• Soldering techniques
• Using a collet block to form mounts
• Filing and detailing
• Sawing and assembling components
• Understanding tolerances and fit
• (Optional) Basic stone setting
What will happen on the day?
The day will begin with a group introduction and a class discussion exploring the practical applications of collet making, which will help the tutor gauge everyone’s experience levels. Following this, the tutor will demonstrate how to measure and cut metal for creating collets, after which students will have the chance to try this for themselves.
Next, the tutor will demonstrate how to solder the metal and form round collets using a collet block. Students will then replicate the process under guidance, learning how to manage the tools and materials confidently.
In the afternoon, the session will move on to marking out for cut-downs, with a clear tutor demonstration followed by individual practice. The tutor will then show how to file and refine the collet shape, including how to saw off the bottom section cleanly. Students will apply these steps to their own pieces, continuing to shape and develop their mounts.
Students will finish the day by refining and polishing their work with support and feedback from the tutor.
The session will close with a group reflection and discussion on what’s been learned, as well as ideas for building on these skills in future workshops. For those ready to take the next step, there will also be the opportunity to set a stone into their finished collet as an extension activity.
