What will I make?

You'll be drawing up a variety of scaled technical drawing pages, covering facet drawing, an introductory signet ring project, a more technical trilogy ring project and an earring project.

What will I learn?

  • Mapping out and illustrating gemstone facets

  • Using stencils and mechanical pencils

  • Orthographic drawing and presentation

  • Using a pair of compasses for technical drawing

  • Scaling measurements of a design for presentation

  • Trace transferring

What will happen during the workshop?

We will start the day off by getting to grips with how to properly draw out various gemstone cuts, including round brilliant facets, pear cut facets, princess cut facets, rose cut facets and a selection of others that are likely to pop up within design work. In the afternoon, we will be covering how to draw and present two ring designs orthographically, using a ruler, mechanical pencil, a pair of compasses and stencils. These projects will be a signet ring to introduce you to the steps and a more advanced trilogy ring to really understand how to transfer details from one view to the next. The final project will be outlining how to present a piece that features a moving part, such as a hinge.
