Wanyan Wu

Wanyan Wu is a designer from China who graduated from the Birmingham School of Jewellery, majoring in Jewellery and Relative Products in 2023. Currently, Wanyan is an artist in residence at the School of Jewellery.

Most of Wanyan's works are narrative jewellery, preferring to record the things seen and felt through the medium of jewellery. The techniques used primarily include modelling, enamelling, and glass firing. Wanyan aims to find a breakthrough and innovation that combines traditional craftsmanship with new industry craftsmanship.

The "Candy Boxes" project was inspired by Wanyan's memories of sweets as a child. These memories evoke complex feelings, as candy brought happiness but also the physical pain of tooth decay. This work uses candy images such as gummy bears, ring candy, QQ candy, and watermelon candy to bring the audience back to childhood memories of sweets. The concept of "Pic 'N' Mix" is emphasised in the work, allowing the audience to choose different boxes, types and colours of candies, and different ways to wear them. Through the designer’s hands, each candy gem is inlaid in a silver candy box or worn as beads. Audiences are also involved in the creative process, able to order their unique jewellery.

The project primarily employs 3D printing resin, dyeing technology, metal casting, beading technology, and welding inlay technology.
