The Alchemist Picnic: Selling Jewellery Then & Now [OCT]
Date: Monday 06 October, 2025
Start Time: 6.00 PM
End Time: 8.00 PM
Venue: FORGE
What is the best way for independent designers and makers to sell their work today?
Please join us for a special and informal discussion hosted by The Alchemist Picnic and FORGE. The evening begins with a rare 20-minute edit from Wayne Werner’s 1996 documentary, featuring Barbara Cartlidge — Founder of the Electrum Gallery — and Lesley Craze — Founder of Lesley Craze Gallery. Both London galleries were central to the field of contemporary jewellery for decades, influencing countless designers and shaping the way jewellery was presented and sold.
We’re bringing together generations of designers — from the era of Electrum and the Lesley Craze Gallery right through to today’s emerging makers — for an evening of reflection, insight, and conversation. Together, we’ll explore where we stand now as makers working to profit from our passion.
Following the film, the floor will open for a warm, informal discussion. Designers who exhibited during the Electrum or Lesley Craze years are invited to share their experiences, while newer makers can explore how selling jewellery has evolved — from galleries and fairs to hybrid, online, and social channels.
The aim is to share knowledge across generations, spark ideas, and help everyone leave with a clearer sense of the selling routes that might work for them — all within the encouraging, community-led atmosphere that defines both the Alchemist Picnic and FORGE.
About the documentary & screening
In autumn 1996, Wayne closed his Baltimore studio to travel the world, making videos of the people he met along the way. Four groundbreaking, influential women who changed his life and perspective on jewellery were Lesley Craze, Barbara Cartlidge, Wendy Ramshaw CBE, and Gerda Flockinger CBE.
This screening focuses on two monumental figures in contemporary jewellery: Barbara Cartlidge (Electrum Gallery) and Lesley Craze (Lesley Craze Gallery). Electrum opened in 1971 and ran under Barbara’s direction for decades, while Lesley Craze’s gallery on Clerkenwell Green operated for around 30 years before closing in January 2015. Sadly, both women have since passed away — Barbara in 2017 and Lesley in 2016 — making this a poignant opportunity to hear their voices and perspectives once again.
