SKILLSMASTER: Tap and Die with Wayne Werner [OCT]
Date: Friday 03 October, 2025
Start Time: 10.00am
End Time: 4.30pm
Venue: FORGE
We are thrilled to welcome Wayne Warner to lead an exciting SkillsMaster workshop with us, where participants will delve into the fascinating world of cold connections using the tap and die technique.
Refine your metalsmithing skills and discover innovative ways to join metal without the use of heat. This workshop explores the cold connection method of tap & die, a technique jewellers and watchmakers have used for centuries. Learn to create and use tiny screws for a professional, precise, and secure connection between metal components. This method is ideal for those seeking a solder-free approach while achieving a polished and durable result.
Perfect for metalsmiths wanting to advance beyond basic riveting, this workshop introduces techniques like threading, decorative nuts, threaded tubes, caps, and the versatile "scrivet" (a screw-turned-rivet).
What will I make?
Participants will have the opportunity to:
- Create their own small screws using a micro tap and die kit.
- Practice threading and assembling components using these tools.
- Hand make a simple shackle ring where the piece is held together by screws.
These skills will open possibilities for creating intricate and versatile designs, such as:
Adding pinback findings to fragile soldered pieces.
Attaching thin gold sheets to silver bases.
Joining enamelled components where traditional riveting won't work.
Designing pieces that can be disassembled or adjusted in the future.
Adding hinges for bracelets or repair work where heat cannot be used.
What will happen on the day?
The workshop will begin with detailed demonstrations from the tutor to introduce the techniques and tools. The instructor will provide a comprehensive overview of the tap and die kit, showing examples from their own work and how this method can be applied to a wide range of jewellery projects. You'll learn to make screws, tap holes, and use specialised tools for clean and precise connections.
You will then focus on the technical exercise of creating a shackle ring using the tap and die technique demonstrated in the morning. Participants will practice the techniques, gaining confidence in using the tap and die kit. Alongside this there will be opportunities to discuss design; plan to have lots of “ahh haa!!” moments as you find solutions to your own design challenges!
Don't miss this chance to expand your cold connection skills and bring a fresh approach to your metalsmithing practice!
