Michael Lin Jewellery
Michael Lin is an award-winning jewellery designer and artist maker. He completed his degree and Gem-A gemmology diploma at the renowned Birmingham School of Jewellery in 2023 and continues his practice at the institution as an Artist in Residence. Shortly after his graduation, his is also elected as the Early Career Representative at the Association of Contemporary Jewellery.
His work explores the boundaries between narrative art jewellery and commercial jewellery, creating pieces that can not only be used as wearable art but also as objects and installations. His work combines different materials including unconventional materials, such as biomaterial or recycled material, alongside conventional jewellery material to create pieces that are fun, stylish, and modern. Meanwhile, his work also combines traditional hand-making techniques and digital manufacturing processes to explore the mixture and contrast of geometric and organic forms.
Greatly inspired by the Japanese, Michael’s latest collection reconsiders the traditions and proposes a new material concept for Japanese aesthetics. By utilising natural materials and recycled or sustainable materials, as well as combining the traditional Japanese wax technique 'Mitsuro Hikime' with computer-aided design (CAD) processes, his work invites people to utilise Japanese aesthetic concepts in a modern setting, providing opportunities to discover a perspective of beauty that is often neglected.
