What will I make?

A wire sculpture developed from your ideas and inspirations.

What will I Learn?

In this workshop, you will explore:

  • How to take inspiration from objects or images to develop sculptural ideas

  • Quick drawing exercises to loosen up and spark creativity

  • Sketching with wire to rapidly explore different forms and ideas

  • Techniques for shaping and manipulating different types of wire, including aluminum, brass, copper, and steel

  • How to transition from 2D sketches to 3D sculptures

  • Creating maquettes to test compositions before refining a final piece

  • Soldering basics (optional) for working with brass, copper, and steel

  • Methods for refining and assembling wire structures

What will happen on the day?

The workshop begins with an introduction, where Jacky will provide an overview of the session and share different approaches to working with wire. You'll have the opportunity to see examples for inspiration and get familiar with the materials.

Next, we’ll move on to drawing exercises designed to help generate ideas. Don’t worry if you’re not confident in drawing—Jacky has alternative approaches to help everyone feel comfortable exploring ideas visually.

We’ll then start translating sketches into three-dimensional forms using aluminum wire. This initial phase allows for experimentation and getting a feel for working with wire. You’ll also begin sketching with wire itself, using it to rapidly explore different compositions and concepts.

Following this, we’ll take a closer look at different types of wire and their properties. Jacky will demonstrate annealing and soldering techniques for those who are new to working with brass, copper, and steel.

Students will then begin refining their sculptures, incorporating different wires and techniques to develop their ideas further. Small maquettes (preliminary models) will be created to test compositions and forms before moving on to the final sculpture.

The rest of the session will be dedicated to making. This is your time to work on your wire sculpture, with Jacky offering hands-on support and guidance.

Finally, we’ll tidy up and review everyone’s work, sharing and discussing the pieces created during the session.
