MAKE-DAY: Stone Set Wax Ring [JULY]
Date: Friday 03 July, 2026
Start Time: 10am
End Time: 4.30pm
Venue: FORGE
Join jewellery designer Clio Saskia for this exciting workshop exploring how to design and carve a stone-set ring in wax. Focusing on either a bezel or claw setting, you'll learn how to build your design around a stone, considering both aesthetics and practicality from the outset. Alongside stone-setting techniques, you'll develop essential wax working skills and explore decorative surface details to make your ring uniquely your own.
You'll be provided with two different shaped CZ stones, including round and oval options, allowing you to experiment with different approaches to stone setting and design.
The workshop also includes a FREE wax heat pen to take home, so you can continue developing your wax carving skills after the class.
What will I make?
You will create a wax-carved ring featuring a single stone set in either a bezel or claw setting, ready to be professionally cast in the metal of your choice.
What will I learn?
- How to design a ring around a chosen stone
- The differences between bezel and claw settings in wax
- How to accurately measure and plan a stone setting
- Techniques for carving and shaping wax using hand tools
- How to use a wax heat pen to add, refine and modify forms
- Decorative techniques including carving and wax granulation
- How to prepare a wax model for professional casting
- Guidance on the casting process and finishing your design after the workshop
What will happen on the day?
The workshop begins with an introduction to stone setting in wax and an overview of the project. Clio will share examples of finished pieces and explain how different stone shapes, sizes and setting styles can influence the design of a ring.
You will plan your design and learn how to create an appropriate setting for each stone. Working from a wax tube, you'll carve and shape your ring, building either a bezel or claw setting around your chosen stone with guidance from the tutor throughout.
As your ring takes shape, you'll explore techniques for refining the form and adding decorative details. Clio will demonstrate ways to incorporate carved textures and wax granulation to enhance the design and create a more personalised piece.
Towards the end of the session, you'll learn how to clean up and finish your wax model, ensuring it is ready for casting. Clio will also explain the next stages of the process, including casting options, expected costs and recommendations for trusted casting services, so you can confidently take your design through to completion.
