Alistair McCallum will be sharing highlights from their recent sourcing trips to Madagascar — a country rich in gems and full of challenges, promise, and remarkable stories.

Their journey began with a mission: to build ethical, transparent supply chains and support local communities by sourcing gems directly. Madagascar, with its wealth of sapphires, garnets, spinel, chrysoberyl, zircon, and tourmaline, offered that potential — but it wasn’t easy. From negotiating complex village politics to working with local lapidaries and introducing gemmological training, the team navigated everything from bandits and bureaucracy to misidentified stones and mining rivalries.

Discover what they found — from teal sapphires and rich garnets to exceptional parti-coloured tourmalines — and the realities behind bringing these stones to market. Learn how they’re supporting safer mining methods, improving local cutting standards, and why sourcing responsibly in a country like Madagascar takes resilience, trust-building, and a long-term vision.
