LEARN-TO: Sliding Pin Catch [APR]

In this workshop, you'll be guided through the making of a decorative sliding pin clasp. This technical project is designed to enhance your jewellery making skills and introduce new techniques that you can integrate into your work.
The workshop is taught by Sarah Macrae, author of the renowned technical jewellery book Fastenings & Findings for Jewellers.

What will I make?
You’ll make a sliding pin clasp with space for a decorative element on top, allowing you to incorporate your unique design themes.
What will happen on the day?
The day will start with a demonstration on how to make a sliding pin clasp, accompanied by step-by-step written instructions and personalised support from the tutor.
You'll receive a materials pack with everything needed to complete the clasp within the allotted time. We’ll cover a range of techniques, including precision filing, soldering, riveting, and finishing. You’ll also have the opportunity to create a decorative wire element, ensuring your clasp is unique to your design style.
Sarah will bring a selection of different catch samples for you to examine and discuss. Mastering a variety of clasp-making techniques will enable you to select the perfect clasp for each of your designs, elevating the quality of your work.
What skills do I need?
Intermediate & Advanced
For those who already have some prior knowledge on the subject or have relevant skills.
Ideal for makers looking to up skill and advance their practice.
What should I bring?
- Reading glasses (if you need them!)
- Notebook for taking notes
- Apron
What should I wear?
Clothes: Casual and not too precious as they may get a bit dusty or damaged. Avoid long, loose fitting sleeves and anything that might catch or get caught whilst you are working.
Shoes: Casual flat shoes and no open toed sandals in case you drop a hammer or something hot on them!
Hair: Tie long hair back.
Who is my instructor?
Sarah Macrae has been making jewellery and teaching for more than 40 years. Sarah recently wrote a book on Catches and Findings, published in 2022 by Crowood Press.
