LEARN-TO: Plate your jewellery [SEPT 2027]

This practical workshop introduces you to electroplating for jewellery making. You'll learn the basics of safe operation and set-up, and how different metals can be deposited onto a surface to create different colours and finishes. We'll cover preparing a piece for plating, controlling the process, and troubleshooting common issues. By the end, you'll have the skills and confidence to use electroplating both for clean, professional finishing and for creative colour effects in your own jewellery work.

What skills will I earn?

- How electroplating works, and the role of the anode and cathode

- Preparing and cleaning a surface for plating

- Achieving silver/white, copper/pink and gold/yellow finishes

- Practical applications in jewellery finishing and repair

What will happen on the day?

You will be guided through the equipment and plating solutions used for electroplating, gaining an understanding of how different metals produce different colours and finishes. We will explore how plating can be used both to finish and repair jewellery, and as a creative tool in its own right. Alongside this, you'll learn how to set up and control the electrical supply, position your work correctly, and clean and finish your plated piece, supported by a practical introduction to the process.

At the end of the workshop you will have a good understanding of how to use the equipment safely and effectively, and will leave with your own plated samples.

Who is my instructor?

Peter Musson is a specialist silversmith and educator with over 20 years’ experience teaching Jewellery and Metal at the Royal College of Art. He has lectured and delivered masterclasses internationally, including at Musashino Art University, Hanyang University, Bishopsland, and the Glasgow School of Art. Known for his expertise in silversmithing and technical innovation, Peter combines practical skill with creative mentorship, guiding students in contemporary metalwork and jewellery design.

Accessibility

Most of this workshop takes place at street level in our showroom, which is step-free and accessible. Some specialist equipment is located in our lower-level workshop, which can only be accessed via stairs, as the building does not have lift access.
