In this engaging taster workshop, you’ll explore the traditional technique of hand engraving. Guided by an experienced tutor, you’ll receive live demonstrations that showcase the fundamentals of engraving. With personalised, one-on-one support, you’ll learn to handle traditional push tools and apply techniques to create intricate patterns and designs on copper. Whether you’re a complete beginner or simply curious about this art form, this session is designed to inspire creativity and build confidence.

What skills will I learn?
During the workshop, you’ll create your own engraved copper piece, featuring designs of your choice. This could range from geometric patterns to freehand drawings, depending on your style and interest. Your finished piece will serve as a beautiful keepsake and a reflection of your newly learned skills.
Engraving with traditional push tools: Learn how to handle and manoeuvre push tools to carve clean, precise lines into copper.
Design planning and execution: Learn how to transfer designs onto your copper piece.
Tool control and technique: Develop fine motor skills to engrave with accuracy and confidence, including how to adjust pressure and angles for different effects.
Problem-solving and creativity: Overcome challenges in the engraving process while experimenting with your artistic ideas.

Who is my instructor?
Dudley Withers is a craftsman who trained at Sir John Cass College specialising in Engraving and other decorative techniques including chasing. Having worked with Francis Cooper - a silversmith in the Arts and Crafts tradition for 6 years he returned to Sir John Cass College to teach engraving as a part time lecturer whilst running his own shop. There he maintained his interest in engraving doing work on commission with a bias towards jewellery but included selling antique silver and glass. He has now expanded his interests to include horology, particularly engraved clocks.
