LEARN-TO: Experimental Enamelling [APRIL 2027]

In this one-day workshop we will explore the use of hand-cut and found stencils to create a variety of pattern and design using sifted vitreous enamels. We will also explore the use of under and over firing as a way to change both colour and surface texture.

What will I make?

You will make a series of your own samples which will have the potential to be made into finished pieces of jewellery in your own time.

What will I learn?

In the workshop you’ll learn a range of experimental enamelling techniques, including:

– Preparation of metal

– Application of enamel

– Designing and cutting stencils

– Sifting through stencils and lifting techniques

– Firing techniques including under-firing, and over-firing

– Finishing techniques

What will happen during the workshop?

You will start the day with getting to know your fellow makers and looking at examples of what you will be making. You will also be supplied with everything you need including pad, pencil, apron, copper and enamels.

Throughout the day here will be a series of demonstrations each followed by a chance for you to try out the techniques demonstrated.

The day will be rounded off with a relaxed chat and a chance to discuss each other’s samples.

What skills do I need?

Intermediate & Advanced: For those who have foundation knowledge and experience of jewellery making. Ideal for makers looking to up skill and advance their practice.

What should I bring?

Students should bring a notebook, a pen and a camera (or phone camera), to record their samples. I would also recommend that all students bring a dust mask and an apron. Please only wear closed toed shoes in the studio.

What should I wear?

Clothes: Casual and not too precious as they may get a bit dusty or damaged. Avoid long, loose fitting sleeves and anything that might catch or get caught whilst you are working.

Shoes: Casual flat shoes and no open toed sandals in case you drop a tool or something hot on them!

Hair: Tie long hair back.

Who is my teacher?

Jessica Turrell is a professional jeweller and enameller with over four decades of teaching experience. Trained in jewellery and enamel at Central Saint Martins, she established her studio in Bristol and exhibits internationally. Her practice explores experimental approaches to vitreous enamel, focusing on mark-making, surface texture and innovative techniques in contemporary jewellery.
