This one-day introductory workshop offers a comprehensive introduction to the world of diamonds, focusing on grading, identification, and pricing. Led by experienced diamond grader and jewellery professional Avi BenEzra, the session introduces the language, tools, and systems used to grade, identify, and understand diamonds within the jewellery industry.


This workshop provides a solid foundation for anyone looking to build confidence in understanding, discussing, and working with diamonds, whether as a jeweller, designer, student, or industry professional.


What will I learn?


This workshop focuses on knowledge, observation, and identification skills. Participants will leave with a clear framework for understanding diamond grading and identification, supported by practical examples and guided examination of diamonds.


Key skills and knowledge covered in the session include:



  • Understanding the 4 Cs of diamond grading: cut, carat, clarity, and colour

  • Recognising different diamond cuts and shapes

  • Understanding fluorescence and the use of ultraviolet (UV) light

  • Identifying diamond treatments and enhancements

  • Recognising diamond imitations

  • Learning the steps involved in professional diamond grading

  • Understanding how diamonds are used in jewellery and assessed in trade contexts

  • Gaining an introduction to pricing and value considerations


What will happen during the workshop?


The workshop will run as a full-day session from 10am4pm, combining explanation, discussion, and hands-on observation.


The day will begin with an introduction to diamonds, their background and their role in the jewellery industry, followed by an overview of the tools used in diamond grading. Avi will then guide participants through the 4 Cs grading system, explaining each component in detail and showing real examples.


Throughout the day, participants will examine samples of diamonds, learn how to identify key characteristics, and explore topics such as fluorescence, treatments, imitations, and grading steps. The session will include scheduled breaks and a lunch break, with time for questions and discussion throughout.


What skills do I need?


Beginners: Perfect for those starting out or who have little to no experience.


What should I bring?



  • Reading glasses (if you need them!) 

  • Notebook and pen (to take notes)



Each student will be provided with an essential gemmology identification and grading kit, including: a loupe, fluorescence torch  tweezers, cleaning cloth, notebook, pen, and a course booklet.


What should I wear? 


Clothes: Casual and not too precious as they may get a bit dusty or damaged.  Avoid long, loose fitting sleeves and anything that might catch or get caught whilst you are working.


Shoes: Casual flat shoes and no open toed sandals in case you something on them!


Hair: Tie long hair back.


Who is my teacher?


Avi BenEzra is a professional diamond grader with over 25 years of experience dealing, grading diamonds, and creating jewellery within the diamond and jewellery industry. He the founder of the European Diamond & Gemstones Reports Laboratory and an experienced teacher. Avi is passionate about sharing his knowledge and experience to support the development of students entering the diamond and jewellery world.

Accessibility


Most of this workshop takes place at street level in our showroom, which is step-free and accessible. Some specialist equipment is located in our lower-level workshop, which can only be accessed via stairs, as the building does not have lift access.
