Jewellery Without Boundaries: Colour, Material & Value in Contemporary Jewellery

Join us for an evening in conversation with three fantastic jewellers exhibiting at this year’s Goldsmiths’ Fair: Stephanie Holt, Eve Balashova and Caitlin Murphy, chaired by curator and object historian Sophie Morris.

This conversation will look at how colour, technology and unconventional materials are opening up new possibilities for contemporary jewellery.

Stephanie, Eve and Caitlin all approach jewellery in very different ways, working across traditional techniques, digital processes, unusual materials and bold approaches to colour. Together, they’ll explore where jewellery begins to overlap with sculpture and how pushing beyond traditional materials can change the way we think about what jewellery can be

About the panel?

Chair: Sophie Morris is a curator and object historian specialising in jewellery. She was formerly Curator of the Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Collection at the Victoria and Albert Museum and has worked across exhibitions, film and writing, exploring materials and techniques including gemstones, enamels, gold, silver and mosaics.
Sophie is currently Exhibition Curator for the inaugural Birmingham Jewellery Biennial, taking place in May 2027, with Colour as its theme

Panel Members:
Caitlin Murphy is an Irish maker based in Glasgow. She graduated from the Glasgow School of Art in 2022 before becoming a Bishopsland Fellow. Her practice sits across jewellery and metalwork, with a strong interest in making, materials and sculptural forms. Her work is held in permanent collections including the National Museum of Ireland and the Arts Council of Northern Ireland.

Eve Balashova is a contemporary jewellery designer and maker based in Glasgow. Her work combines 3D-printed nylon with traditional metalworking techniques, creating bold, colourful and lightweight jewellery. Her pieces explore geometry, natural forms, colour, texture and movement, with each piece individually dyed by hand.

Stephanie Holt is a contemporary jewellery designer and maker based near Warwick. Her work explores contrasts in structure, colour and materials, particularly through her sculptural U.F.O. collection, which combines precious metals and resin. Her work is designed to sit somewhere between jewellery and wearable sculpture

What will happen on the evening?

Who is it for?

Jewellers, designers, makers and people working across the wider craft and creative industries, as well as jewellery collectors and anyone interested in contemporary jewellery.

This evening will also appeal to makers from other craft disciplines who are interested in the connections between jewellery, sculpture, design, materials and technology, and to anyone curious about how contemporary makers are challenging traditional ideas around what jewellery can be.

Accessibility

Most of this workshop takes place at street level in our showroom, which is step-free and accessible. Some specialist equipment is located in our lower-level workshop, which can only be accessed via stairs, as the building does not have lift access.
