Charmian Harris Jewellery
Charmian and her daughter, Meriel, make jewellery using an unusual range of colourful precious and semi-precious stones as well as dichroic and Murano glass. They work with high carat gold and silver using hand-held tools such as hammers, pliers and blow-torches to shape and solder the metal.
Charmian studied ceramics at the West Surrey School of Art in Farnham where she took part in jewellery classes with Jaqueline Mina. Most of her techniques, however, are self-taught and have been developed over the decades since she started making in the early 1980s. These, in turn, have been passed down to Meriel.
Their work is frequently inspired by nature– leaves, grasses, birds and other animals but it also has a feel of ancient Roman and Greek jewellery with simple designs, soft textures and vibrant colours. They choose stones with unusual cuts so that most of their pieces are one-off designs.
