MAKE-DAY: Cloisonné Enamelling

In this one day workshop you will make a silver cloisonné vitreous enamel pendant using the sterling silver disc provided. Be creative and design your own colourful pattern exploring this intricate technique with our expert instructor Linda Connelly.

What will I make?
In this workshop, you’ll use a 25mm sterling silver disc to create a cloisonné enamel piece. You can choose to have a hole for a jump ring, or mount it in a bezel at a later date, transforming it into a pendant or brooch.
What will happen on the day?
Design Creation: Start with a silver wire design. This can be simple or more complex depending on your experience. You will a choice of designs or you can use your own.
Enamelling: Add layers of enamel to your design, each layer being kiln-fired to build up vibrant colours over four to six firings.
Texture and Detail: Incorporate silver foils and underglaze details to enhance texture and interest.
Finishing Touches: Grind and polish the enamel and silver to achieve a beautifully finished piece.
For those with previous enamelling experience, this workshop offers an excellent opportunity to refine your skills and expand your knowledge with new techniques to further enhance your practice and designs
What skills do I need?
Beginners Perfect for those starting out or who have little to no experience.
Intermediate For those who already have some prior knowledge on the subject or have relevant skills.
What should I bring?
- Reading glasses or magnifier for closeup work if you need it
- Apron to protect your clothes
- Reference images
- Fine scissors that cut at tips for cutting wires
- Any previous pieces if you would like advice on how they could be improved
What should I wear?
Clothes: Casual and not too precious as they may get a bit dusty or damaged. Avoid long, loose fitting sleeves and anything that might catch or get caught whilst you are working.
Shoes: Casual flat shoes and no open toed sandals in case you drop a hammer or something hot on them!
Hair: Tie long hair back.
Who is my instructor?
Linda Connelly is an award winning enamel artist and jeweller who has been making enamelled jewellery for over thirty years from her studio in Surrey. She is an experienced tutor who spent nearly twenty years teaching enamelling and jewellery making in adult education, most recently teaching her own private classes up until the pandemic
